Fulfilling the wishes of Palliative Care Patients

While recovering  in hospital last week, due to the after-effects of a stroke, Moana’s daughter Christina, leaned towards  her mum and asked her if she still wanted to fulfil her wish!!

What sort of question was that? Nothing could stop Moana from joining her grandson, two daughters and their partners, on a family weekend to Waiheke. Before leaving for this special occasion, a  weekend’s worth of groceries, kindly donated by  Countdown Takanini was collected. On Friday morning the family were transported to Fuller’s Ferry by two cars supplied by Lexus Auckland City. Special treatment was in store for Moana, who was driven by Angela of  Manukau Driving Miss Daisy. The family caught the 11am ferry to the island and upon arrival, were greeted with the sight of a car from Waiheke Rentals, organised especially for this retreat away.

The family spent three days on Waiheke. Charlie Farley’s restaurant and Wai Kitchen both provided lunch on respective days and Saturday morning gave them the opportunity to sample wines at the Mud Brick winery. Peter and Ingrid Coakley, very generously gifted the family the use of their beachfront home for the weekend, where they could simply enjoy the views afforded to them and the ambience of the island.

On Saturday evening, the extended family headed to Waiheke for a barbecue, enjoying a night of song and laughter.

“Even my dad came,” Christina, Moana’s daughter recounted. “And they have been divorced for years. The most special and amazing part of the journey was us, being together, as a family at the barbecue, singing and lighting lanterns at the beach. It’s something we’ll all take with us, long after we’ve left.”
