Fulfilling the wishes of Palliative Care Patients

Glenice Hackett has a wonderful niece, Rachel.  Hearing about the work we do, Rachel contacted Race4Life Trust and told us the story about her Aunty.  Glenice has been terminally diagnosed with cancer. Rachel has known for a long time, that it was a dream of Glenice’s, to travel to Australia to spend some time with her daughter who lives in Brisbane.

The response from our supporters to this wish was stunning and in no time at all, a trip to Australia had been organised. The family thought it best to keep it a secret from Glenice.  Bruce, Glenice’s husband has done a splendid job, here!!

The couple will be picked up from their Hokitika home on April 16 th, by Mark from Hokitika Taxis and transported to Greymouth, where they will catch the TranzAlpine to Christchurch. Rachel will pick them up from the train station, but instead of taking them to her home, which is the normal routine, Rachel will drop them at the Airport Sudima Hotel , where the manager Ifti has gifted them a night, including an evening dinner and breakfast the next day.

They will travel to Brisbane, in the morning, the flights being generously donated by Hick Bros.

Glenice and Bruce will spend 12 days in Brisbane with their daughter.

On the return trip they will stay a night with Rachel in Christchurch and then return to the Coast via the TranzAlpine.  Scotty from Greymouth Taxi’s will take them home to Hokitika.

A huge thank you to: Hokitika Taxis, KiwiRail, The Sudima Hotel Christchurch, Hick Bros and Greymouth Taxis. An amazing example of team work and caring communities.
