Fulfilling the wishes of Palliative Care Patients

Bruce Kirk is a courageous 55 year old man who has recently been diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma.

Bruce and his 14 year old daughter Hally live on Waiheke. His wish was to do something special with his daughter, that would create a memory for them both, and one that Hally could cherish after he has gone.

Together they decided they wanted to hit the city and create some precious memories together! The pair were flown over to Auckland City by Richard Stening of Oceania Helicopters on Sat 19th November. A first for both Bruce and Hally!

Tony Elsmore of Continental Car Services offered them a car for the day and Heather Johnson volunteered to be their chauffeur. They were treated to Brunch by Dan Ward from Hip Group, and chose to use the voucher at the St Heliers Bistro and Café. A return trip along the waterfront delivered them to their charming room at the Mercure Hotel.

As a surprise for Bruce, he was whisked off for the afternoon in John Dennehey’s 1986 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato. There is quite a story behind this car. While this was happening Hally enjoyed a makeover provided by two of our beauty therapist volunteers Louise Pilkington and Rachel Virtue.

Our volunteer photographer Sam van Tuyl was there on hand to take some photos of Father and Daughter throughout the afternoon. The evening was topped off with a meal gifted by Jeremy Ellis at the prestigious Botswana Butchery.

Next morning Bruce and Hally were treated to a full buffet breakfast at the Mercure Hotel before returning home on the ferry, with tickets supplied by  Lara Green from Fullers.

Vector Arena have gifted the pair another opportunity to spend time together. In February they will attend the concert ‘Panic at the Disco’ together!! Hally is really looking forward to educating her Dad in modern music!

Thank you to all those who have generously offered their time, and services, to help us fulfill Bruce’s wish.
